Kim Kosmas of the Fire Bureau said the spray “didn’t have any additional reaction with him already being on fire.”

What is your reactions?

... I would guess not. Even women that are looking at porn don't wanna see that stuff :/

Well I think the burning pain in his eyes would just be drowned out by the burning pain of his body parts that are ablaze. I sure hope I don't ever get set on fire in Oregon.

Well one, I would like to know why the man set him self on fire, I know it says he had psy problem, still something must of caused it.
Two, why are the pepper spray and fire extinguishers the same color.

Three, it was a woman officer, kinda makes sense now XD Jk

I'll stick with the female officer on this one....

I think if I saw some guy ON FIRE i'd do anything to TRY and help... I can't imagine the amount of pressure you'd feel trying to react to this.... Something so uncommon and unlikely.

It does worry me that the OC and FIRE Ext. are that similar, but at least she tried.... I guess.

She should have taken the time to double check and make sure she was grabbing the right piece of equipment. Even though they are the same color, I doubt the pepper spray and the fire extingusher look very similar.

It was an intense situation and I know she proceded with the best of intentions, but staying cool calm and collected might have made the world of difference.

I feel terrible for her though, having tried to help, and having it turn out like that. Thats a huge burden to carry. Probally not to much that could have been done in the first place though.

When the shit hits the fan you resort back to training. I think everyone here would have a hard time differentiating the two canisters, I've seen them. They both are about the same size, and have the same spray mechanism. Yes, she acted with haste, but she was trying to save a life. In my opinion, if they are going to have two things in the trunk, that look almost identical, they need to differentiate them with a color. The way the human mind works under extreme stress situations, you just can't have two things that look so similar in which one is potentially harmless (the pepper spray was actually water based, so it did something to put out the flames) and one is designed to save.

Sounds like an opportunity for some policy changes in police departments so that it doesn't happen again. Though, that's unlikely to happen anytime soon due to the high cost associated with replacing equipment.

Quality isn't expensive. It's Priceless.

At least she acted. My guess is everyone else just stood and watched, but at least she tried. That has to be such a burden to live with now.

I agree, it is assnine that those two things are labled with the same color. Either differentate the color, secure the pepper spray in a box or case, or remove the pepper spray from the car.

Tex, how expensive is it for some spray paint and masking tape?
Just paint A black stripe (or some other color) around the canister of pepper spray.
Re-Training officers, that gets pricey....

The officer didn't screw up that bad. It was a very unusual situation, and she did revert back on training. Perhaps the sudden surge of adrenaline clouded her judgment a bit.
How many of you in a situation like that, without prior knowledge of this incident, would absolutely NOT make the same mistake?

I'd probably have messed up and grabbed a canister of gasoline.... Not to often you're faced with such a situation.
