B
BALCS    
Body armor load carriage system- body armor subsystem of the SPEAR system. BALCS features an armor vest, that carries BALCS-cut soft armor, and two armor plates, one in the front, and one in the rear. The BALCS vest comes in two versions. There is a SF model (commonly used by U.S. Army special forces), that has three vertical rows of MOLLE/PALS webbing, and ALICE attachment point on the bottom. The other version, is the ranger version (used by the U.S. Army Rangers), that has a traditional MOLLE/PALS webbing on the front, rather than that of the SF version. BALCS vests were made by Ceradyne, and are no longer in production. They were replaced by the Eagle Industries CIRAS vest.

Denotes type of airsoft event that incorporates realistic combat situations

BB    
Ball Bearing / Bullet Ball What an airsoft gun shoots, typically a 6mm or 8mm sphere. They range in weight, and are well known in .12 .20 .23 .25 etc.

BDU    
Battle Dress Uniform

Bergen    
A military rucksack/backpack used by the British Army. The name comes from the town in Norway where it originated. It can hold 120 litres and is issued in two forms, long back and short back. Most infantry prefer the short back due to better integration with the issued webbing (PLCE).

BFM    
A large rucksack/patrol pack, made by Camelbak, and first introduced around 2003/2004. It has 2500 cubic inches of spaces. It is unknown was the name "BFM" stands for.

Bolle    
Makers of safety eyewear. Used by many comercial companies and military units.

Box Mag    
Magazine in shape of a box. Usually holds 2,500 - 5,000 rounds.

Bull Pup    
A Bull Pup is a design where the gearbox, magazine, and hop-up is moved towards the rear of the gun to allow a longer barrel to fit in a shorter gun. Examples of the Bull Pup design are: P90, FN2000, L85, Styer AUG, and the FAMAS.

C
C-mag    
A C mag. is a magazine that has 2 drums on it (one on each side of the magwell) and is capable of holding 2500-3000 bb's depending on which brand. Most are auto wining but some are manual.

C02    
Gas propellant used for airguns

CA    
Classic Army = An AEG brand known to be reliable.

Camper    
A player who sits in one location for a period of time. Generally, defensive camping is considered good form, while camping while on assault is considered bad form

Carbine    
A shorter variant of the full sized assault rifle.

CBA    
Combat Body Armour. Old issue British Army personal body armour. Consists of outer liner and kevlar inserts, with pockets for small ceramic plates.

CETME    
Centro de Estudios Técnicos de Materiales Especiales. A Spanish firearms manufacturer whose receiver design later became the blueprint for the German Heckler & Koch G3 series of battle rifles.

Check Fire    
Check where you're firing Often given to assure you haven't fired on friendly forces. Similar to cease fire.

CHICOM    
CHIna COMpany, a name to designate the
plethora of companies cloning other manufacturers
designs.

Chrono / Chronograph    
A device that measures projectile speed.

CIRAS    
Combat integrated releasable armor system- made by Eagle Industries.
The CIRAS is covered with MOLLE/PALS webbing, and has a patented single point release system.

Classic gun    
any airsoft replica that exists prior to 1995 or that uses external air as the propulsion system.

CO    
Commander or Commanding Officer

CQB    
Close Quarters Battle

CQB/R    
Close Quarters Battle Receiver - denotes an AR variant rifle with a shortened barrel specifically designed for close quarters battle.

CQC    
Close Quarters Combat

DCU    
Desert camo uniform, it is the three color desert camo pattern.

Deathmatch    
This is where every player is for him/her self. last man standing.

DPM    
Disruptive Pattern Material. Standard British Army camoflague pattern. Available in either 4 colour woodland or 2 colour desert.

Dragunov    
Russian made advanced marksman rifle

Dust Cover    
A small plate which covers the ejection port of a gun to keep excess dirt and debris out when not in use.

EBB    
Electric Blow Back. Cheaply made airsoft replicas, shoot at low velocities and are usually powered by AAA batteries.

Echo 1

Ejection Port    
The part on a real steel gun where the shell casing is ejected after firing. In airsoft, this is where most replicas' hop up adjustment is located.

ELCS    
equipment load carriage system- load bearing subsystem of the SPEAR system. ELCS features a load bearing vest, that can be converted into a H-harness, as well as an assortment of pouches. ELCS was made by Safariland, and is no longer in production.

EOTech    
Manufacturer of holographic weapon sights.

EPW    
Enemy Prisoner of War

Escort    
The only modern external air powered manufacturer to date. the company was founded by none other then Mr. Tawada a.k.a. mr. escort. boasting having the strongest recoil of any manufactured guns along with accepting electric gun magazines, escort does custom made guns which will cost no less then 4 figures and 6 months of custom work. escort has also produced a PDW tool for personal protection inside of japan.

ESS    
Manufacturer of safety eyewear. Their goggles and glasses are used by armed forces around the world.

Eye Relief    
The distance between the rear sight/scope and the user's eye. Usually the more eye relief the better.

FSBE    
Full Spectrum Battle Equipment- a armor vest made by Point Blank, for the USMC Recon. The FSBE was adopted by Force Recon in 2000. It accommodates level IIIA soft armor, and front and rear ceramic armor plates. More recent versions of this vest, have a quick release system, that is activated buy pulling a release loop, on the bottom front of the vest. The FSBE was mainly used by the USMC Recon, however, some Army units did use it. The FSBE is no longer issued, and was replaced by the Eagle Industries CIRAS.

FTC (Falcon Toy Company)    
A classic gun company whose gun model choices were the rarest of any model produced with even rarer magazines that retail as much as a cheap gas pistol.

G&G    
Guay Guay Gunshop-High end AEG manufacturer from Taiwan. Known for their excellent AK series of weapons and their UMP replica. Also make a line of M series weapons, Mp5 series and M14s. M14s are known for various issues but have improved in later runs. New series of M rifles are supposed to be of excellent quality. MP5s are reportedly very nice as well, although they are not common.

Also manufactures accesories for GBB pistols including metal slides and frames.

Considered one of the Big 5 companies in airsoft.

G3    
The First battle rifle of the german firearms manufacturer Heckler & Koch G3 which was prototyped during when the current founders did work for the CETME firearms company. the early run of the G3 came with factory wood which was quickly replaced with poly synthetic material the founding members of H&K were former Mauser designers.

Gearbox    
The Gearbox is the "powerhouse" of the AEG and is, by far, the most complicated part. The gearbox holds almost all of the components that make an airsoft gun function. This includes the gears, piston, tappet plate, spring and spring guide. There are different kinds of gearboxes.

Version 1 - The first gearbox made and only found on the Tokyo Marui FA-MAS. Therefore it is rare that you find upgrade parts for the V1

Version 2 - The version 2 gearbox is a widely used gearbox. It can be found in M16's, M4's and MP-5's. There are many ways you can upgrade the V2, and are easy to find.

Version 3 - The version 3 gearbox is a very reliable and durable gearbox. It is very easy to upgrade and can take loads of abuse. The motor is attached to the gearbox so it is easy to align the motor. The Version 3 gearbox can be found in AK-47 or any AK variant, G36's, AUG's, and MP-5K's

Version 4 - The version 4 gearbox is only used in the Tokyo Marui PSG-1. It has a spring tension release and an anti-reversal latch release.

Version 5 - This gearbox is only found in the UZI. It is not a very good gearbox. There are a lot of plastic components, adn is almost impossible to upgrade or repair.

Version 6 - The version 6 gearbox is found in the P90 and the Thompson M1A1. There are not very many upgrade parts for the V6, but the P90's popularity is growing. Therefore manufactures are making more upgrade parts available.

The gearbox [a.k.a. mechbox(slang)] is the most advanced and cumbersome AEG section. Opening the gearbox without knowledge can lead to serious problems with your gun.

Glock    
A pistol that is widely used in the police force, and is common in the Airsoft world. Be warned of 18c and 23f known to wear down faster!

Similar to propane, green gas is a commonly used to power gas guns.

Handguard    
Front part of a gun where the user's hand will go.

Heat Shield    
Part of the hand guard of a gun that protects the user from the heat of the barrel while firing.

HFC    
Ho Feng Co. (brand)

HFC 134a    
Least powerful gas marketed for airsoft guns, used commercially as a coolant.

Hi-Cap    
High Capacity magazine. For most gun types, these hold 300+ BB's. Incorporates a spring that must be wound in order to feed ammo from a reservoir to your gun.

HK    
Heckler and Koch, German gun manufacturer.

Hop Up    
A unit inside an airsoft replica which puts backspin on the BB allowing for greater range out of the replica.

HPA - High Pressure Air    
a fuel source for a classic gun which is just breathable air. its tanks are generally much larger then c02 as its still a gas when compared compared to c02 which is stored as a liquid when compressed. HPA allows a classic gun user to perform normal operation at any temperature but at the cost of having far less volume then c02. HPA tanks are best for non long trigger pull guns. has as sniper rifles and Direct marksmen rifles.

KJW    
A gas gun company that makes decent gas guns for pretty cheap.

Krylon    
Manufacturers of spray paint commonly used to give a camoflagued pattern on both airsoft and real steel weapons.

Low-Cap    
A low-cap or "Low Capacity" magazine has a spring that pushes a short line of bbs into the gun. A low-cap magazine will usually hold between thirty and fifty rounds. They are usually the same capacity as their real steel counterparts. Normally around 30 BB's.

LPEG    
Lower Powered Electric Gun

LRB    
Long Range Barrel. Invented by classic gun manufacturer Sheriff. the concept is a mathematically correct slope inside of the barrel based on length of the barrel to create a fixed hopup effect thus projecting the bb at the furthest possible distance for its given length.

M.O.L.L.E.    
Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment
It is a web system used for putting on pouches, accessories, etc.

M16    
The M16 is used in Wars today and is commonly found in the airsoft world as a primary AEG.

It's known for a long handgrip and full stock.

M203    
Mounted under the M16A2 or M4A1, the single-shot M203 fires 40mm grenades with a devastating blast radius. A "grenade" launcher. It fires either nerf balls or 60 to 100's of bb's at once.

M24    
The M24 is the standard issue advanced marksman rifle for the US Army.

M249    
The M249 squad automatic weapon is an FN Minimi with sundry small changes to meet the US Army's requirements.

M4    
The M4/M16 is used in Wars today and is commonly found in the airsoft world as a primary AEG.

It's known for a short handgrip and retractable stock.

M4a1    
The shortened variant of the M16A2 rifle.

Mag    
See "Magazine"

Mag Seating    
Make sure that the magazine is properly locked in the mag well.

Mag Well    
Area in the receiver where the magazine is placed.

Magazine    
Magazine is the term for describing the device holding BBs which inserts into and feeds a gun. (Clips are used to feed a magazine)

Magpul    
a rubber pull tab, that attaches to the bottom of a magazine, to assist in the removing of a mag from a pouch. Magpuls are made by Magpul Industries

MaH    
Stands for milliamp hours

Maritime    
Connected with the sea, especially in relation to seafaring commercial or military activity

MARPAT    
MARine PATtern camouflage, it is a digital version of the woodland BDU.

Marushin    
the manufacturer of the 8mm pellet and nearly all 8mm related products.

Maruzen    
the longest existing airsoft company. primarily a smg and scatter gun maker.

Multi-Cam = A newer style camo pattern, invented by Crye.

Modular Integrated Communications Helmet= Newest issue helmet for the United States Armed Forces. Replaced the PASGT helmet.

Mid-cap    
A mid-cap or "Middle Capacity" magazine has a spring that pushes a line of bbs into the gun; similar to the low-cap except that it has a longer spring and can hold more. A mid-cap magazine will usually hold between sixty and one hundred rounds.

Rail Attachment System

RBA    
Ranger body armor- the first modern body armor issued by the U.S. military, that began use in the earlier 1990s. the RBA consists of level IIIA soft armor, and hard armor plates. Earlier versions only had a front plate pocket, while later versions had a front and back plate pocket. The RBA is rather heavy compared to other modern armor vests. It has a wrap-around cummerbund design. It was made by Protective materials company, and is no longer in production. However, Supreme Protector did manufacture their own version, that was saw use by the airforce. The RBA is what the Army Ranger used during Operation Gothic Serpant, and in the movie "Blackhawk Down".

Part of the replica where the BB is chambered and shot from, also where the gearbox, motor, spring, and hop-up are located.

Red Gas    
a slightly higher psi propane. but enough psi whereas it may severly damage the internals of a gas blowback gun.

Standard British Army respirator. Uses any standard NATO 40MM filters. Note, standard glass eye pieces are NOT rated for airsoft use. Reinforced, tinted replacements are available.

SAW    
Squad Automatic Weapon. Specific SAW's are the M249, M240, M60, L86, FN MINIMI, FN MAG.

Scatter Gun    
alternate name for a shotgun.

Scope    
A sighting device used for easy target acquisition and magnification of distant targets.

Sheriff    
a early airsoft manufacturer based in Osaka, Japan. they currently produced alloy slides for Western Arms. they also have credit with their "dangerous AK' series which used the FTC AK magazines along with the very rare Highlander Magnum limited run series which were made nearly all by hand.

Shims    
Small metal washers that help to evenly space the gears. Bad shims can lead to your gears stripping and locking up. Also, take note that most Mpegs have cheaper shims and may require new ones.

Shoei    
a family owned and operated model gun company that used the Escort gas system in their WWII production runs. they also used to manufacturer motorcycle helmets.

Sighting In    
Using your gun's sights to aim at a target.

Selective Integrated Rail System producted by A.R.M.S.

Skirmish (to Skirmish)    
To use airsoft replicas in a mock battle, also known as Wargaming

Slide    
The primary moving section of any automatic gun; most people think of the 'slide' as the top half of a semi-automatic pistol like the M9. This is correct, but the slide can also be the bolt, hidden inside a gun, seen most often with assault rifles.

SMG    
Sub Machine Gun

SOPMOD    
Special Operations Peculiar Modification. This is an accesory kit/system for the M4A1 rifle as used by US SOCOM. It contains such things as KAC RIS forearm, Trijicon ACOG, suppressors and the PEQ-2.

SPEAR    
Special operations forces personal equipment advanced requirements. Consists of there parts-ELCS (equipment load carriage system-see "ELCS"), BALCS (body armor load carriage system-see "BALCS"), and a back pack subsystem consisting of a Main rucksack, Patrol Pack, and a Butt-pack (see UM-21 rucksack system).

Springer    
A spring powered airsoft gun. Usually known for being cheap and lower end.

Squad    
Represents a group of fighters on a mission that usually consist of 3-10 people.

Stock (adjective)    
An unmodified gun, or factory parts.

Stock (noun)    
The rear of the gun, goes on your shoulder.

SUSAT    
Sight Unit Small Arms, Trilux. Standard scope with fixed 4x magnification, found on most British Army L85s, M249 Paras and Browning .50. Replica made by Star Airsoft.

T
Tango    
"T" in the phonetic alphabet, used as code for Terrorist "Tango" being the first letter

Tanio Koba    
Tanio Kobayashi, inventor of many gas systems and worked for classic gun manufacturer MGC. credited with the birth of the airsoft 10/22 and the concept of the airsoft barrel twisting which looks similar to rifling to replace the traditional hopup method.

Tappet Plate    
Part of the Gearbox, the tappet plate attaches to the air nozzle. It looks like a long black piece of plastic that has an "arm" near the backside of it and a small spring. A common problem of misfeeds when it breaks or moves.

Teamdeathmatch    
This is where a player fights on a team to "kill" the enemy at all cost.

Threaded Barrel    
External barrel with a screw thread on it for the attachment of silencers and flash hiders.

Tightbore    
An internal upgrade- smaller inner diameter of barrel

TM    
Tokyo Marui = An AEG Brand, known to be reliable.

Tactical Response Uniform

rucksack subsystem of the SPEAR system. features a main pack, patrol pack, and a butt-pack. The components were made in woodland camo, and DCU camo, however, a limited number were manufactured in black. The UM-21 rucksack system was made by Gregory, and is no longer in production.

USP    
Universal Service Pistol. Real steel made by Heckler & Koch and reproduced by several airsoft manufacturers in both the 'Full size' .45ACP and 'Compact' 9mm forms.
